Robert E Lee commanded the Confederate army in the Civil war. His very first actual military engagement was at Cheat Mountain in Virginia during the Civil war. Clearly, Lee was a distinguished gentleman and carried strong leadership skills. Born in 1807, he was a rival to Ulysses Grant during the Civil war. Before this time he graduated from West Point with honors, and from that moment onward he began developing an amazing military career. From 1855 to 1859 he became a refined officer in the Calvary and was actually called on to put an end to one of the more famous abolitionists within history, "John Brown" at Harpers Ferry.
